Pecanwood Country Club

Pretoria, South Africa

An upmarket residential golf estate sited on the banks of the Hartebeespoort Dam, a half hour’s drive from Johannesburg, boasts the only Jack Nicklaus `signature` golf course in Africa. The area is a haven for water sports and hang gliding and boasts a vulture feeding station on the nearby mountains. Pecanwood is set against the backdrop of the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains, making for an eye-catching setting, with water sparkling under the rising wall of land.

Although the course is relatively flat, well positioned bunkers and water features ensure that it offers a good challenge to golfers of all standards. The layout bears the distinctive Nicklaus characteristics of wide fairways and large multi-leveled greens. 6000 trees were planted during its construction, but it is difficult to lose a ball at Pecanwood other than in a water hazard, of which there are several – but the course also has the designer’s hallmark of abundant and severe bunkers. Putting surfaces are fast and demanding. Players soon realize that precise positional play and lines of approach are required if pars and birdies are to be had.  The short 13th is the courses signature hole with water between tee box and the flag and covering the left side of the green. After the 18th, you can look forward to an after-round beverage in the magnificent clubhouse overlooking the water to the mountains.
