If quantity of golf is a consideration for your golfing holiday, this is the place as Pinehurst boast eight Courses. Yes – eight! This resort features more holes than any other place in the USA and features two courses which regularly rank in the top 100 international courses – No 2 and No 8.
Number 2 has broad fairways, no showpiece signature hole and no particularly breathtaking vista, so what is its appeal? In a nutshell, around the greens you will find a sterner test of the short game than anywhere else you could care to mention. The fairways deliver a hospitable Southern welcome to the business end of the holes – and then they chew you up and spit you out. The smallest mistakes short of the green are likely to leave you in a world of trouble with bunkers and bad rough placed wherever a poor shot is likely to end. Hot and heavy approach shots to the lightning quick greens are likely to allow you another try from the back of the green – it’s akin to chipping onto a snooker table. Similarly, the inverted dome shape of many of the greens may end up back at your feet if the stroke is not firm enough up the many false fronted greens. Take your best short game with you- and don’t forget a sense of humour.
