Hutchinson, Kansas, United States of America
Prairie Dunes is a gem of a course, somewhat hidden in rural Kansas in the quiet town of Hutchinson. The greens of the course are some of the finest to be found, but are small, virtually all double tiered and almost always at an elevated position from your approach shot. The shot into the green should be placed with all the care you can – but that is difficult to impossible with a blind approach. Designed by Perry Maxwell, the fairways make clever use of the topography; in some cases you can imagine being on the sea with the undulating fairways emulating the water of the ancient sea this course is built on.
The fairway bunkers are fair and far between, but there is little need for them as the rough is extreme – be prepared to mark the ball lost as it will be difficult to locate an errant ball. Two holes alone make this course special; the 8th is the highest handicapped hole and features ripples running across the fairway just waiting to kick a ball into trouble. The 12th is another brilliant par 4 with a pair of cottonwoods framing the approach to the green demanding a high shot over them or a low punch running into the green. Great risk and reward throughout the course.
