To become a member of this course, you need to be nominated by seven members. You even need to apply to make an application. There’s a reason for this, as the Club jealously defends its privacy and traditions. Everything about this club talks of its class and refinement, from its understated change rooms, the number of long term staff still in service there to the polite gentlemen on the course who will invite you to join their group for a round on the course.
San Francisco is another of A.W Tillinghast’s gems of course design. The course is surrounded by the city which steals any wonderful views of the bay, but the fairways are wide and are laid out with care. Tillinghast snakes the fairways through the natural contours of the land, creating natural doglegs and challenging lies. The bunkers are strategically placed, changing planned lines and challenging you to find the right length on each shot. The par three 7th is the signature hole; an elevated green looks down on a kidney-shaped green with 2 bunkers to the left and two behind it. A high ridge runs through the middle of the green spitting long balls off towards the back bunkers. Bring a good wedge and your best behavior.
