Mullen, Nebraska, United States of America
Just outside a town of only 500 people and 5 hours drive from the closest airport lies what some of the legends of golf like Crenshaw and Nicklaus describe as Americas golfing Mecca. The biggest expanse of sand dunes in the U.S provides the perfect terrain and natural wildlife for the finest inland links course in the country. No trees and no water hazards sound like a holiday, but be prepared for the most impressive bunkers you have ever seen. Here, you will find big undulating greens and broad fairways, a multitude of lengths and shapes to the holes and wind. Wind from every direction. In short, a brilliant golfing experience.
Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Corre, 136 possible holes were identified during a 2 year design phase, so make your own choice for the signature hole on this course. The 4th features a crater-sized bunker with a fairway sloping away from it, allowing a player to stay left and play a short, blind shot to the green or keep right and fire in over the bunker to the elevated green. The par 5 1st may be the best though – wide open spaces, multi-leveled and pocked with bunkers, the green awaits surrounded by its escort of small deep bunkers. The Golf club has accommodation for 50 –odd guests, so a few days of golf and this special experience will more than compensate for the distance to be travelled.
