South Africa Mountain Biking

South Africa

Some of the best mountain bikers in the world come from South Africa, so it’s no surprise that the country has been called a mountain biking heaven.

In recent years, concerns about personal safety have dampened the enthusiasm of some foreigners to set out into unknown territory, but the industry has responded with several options that allow you to ride the best that South Africa has to offer.

One option is the trail park. Unlike downhill parks operated at ski resorts, South Africa’s version is the model of a private estate. Pay a nominal fee and you’ll enjoy a day of riding trails created by professional riders who know what “sweet singletrack” really means. One of the best-known of these parks is Dirtopia, just a half hour’s drive from Cape Town.

Another, more liberating option is a mountain biking tour. Along the famous Garden Route, tour operators take you, in guided groups, along spectacular, coastal scenery with stops at vineyards and detours to explore local trails.

Finally, if you’re seeking that real, endurance challenge, there’s the Freedom Trail, 2,200 kilometres (1,367 miles) of trail that runs from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, through the interior of the nation. As the official website for the trail claims, by riding for eight hours a day, you’ll complete the trail in two fortnights!
