Set in the few hills you will find in an otherwise level countryside, Southern Hills makes great use of the changes in elevation to craft an interesting and varied golf course. Add the natural forest to provide more than enough barriers to finding an easy approach to the greens and the level of difficultly of every hole of the course is further increased. The course has a great blend of long par 3’s, short par 4’s and doglegged par 5’s which require well executed drives. Water comes into play on many of the holes and the doglegs demand shaped shots for the optimum positions for your approach to the quick greens. Sloping fairways have the added difficulty of depositing wayward drives in places where you have no direct shot to the greens.
The 16th is a famous par 4; a fairway bunker requires a carry of more than 240m followed by a pinpoint approach shot. The elevated green is surrounded by bunkers on three sides and a creek lies in wait in front for anything short. Too little control will mean that your ball will be found in one of the sand traps – too much caution will end up in the water. It’s a classic test of low handicap golf.
