Sunningdale, England, United Kingdom
If golf is a walk in the park, the saying was developed for Sunningdale – metaphorically. Presenting golf as challenging as it should be, the course is surrounded by deep woods and presents natural tranquility – so much so that paths around the course are a big attraction to local non-golfers for a good walk with their dogs. Its high international ranking is unusual as it is not located on a beachfront and has not hosted any Open Championships, but it makes up for it with a woodlands style course that feels like a big classic English garden. The combination of the natural terrain, sand, birch trees, heather, gorse, pines and water come together beautifully to create a unique environment. It. Sunningdale is the quintessential English golf club in many respects.
The shot variety, change in direction, change in elevation and mix of holes presents excellent golf. The 7th is one of its most memorable holes; a blind tee shot plays to a hillside fairway sloping sharply from right to left. With the green doglegged to the right, a drive on the left of the fairway will leave you with forest blocking an approach shot. The large green is well protected by large bunkers and slopes into the fairway, allowing a well placed tee shot a chance at a birdie putt – classic risk and reward stuff. Spend some time here and play the new course too – while it is not top 100 quality, it shares the same natural beauty of the Old course and remains an excellent golf course.
