Sunrise Golf and Country Club

Yang Mei, Taiwan

Golf found its way to Taiwan via their golf-crazy Japanese neighbors during the early 1900’s. The sport is fast becoming one of the most popular pastimes in the island country with more than 70 courses now in existence. Robert Trent Jones Jnr was commissioned to build a course in northern Taiwan, settling on the slopes of one of the highest hills in the area. The natural elevation is brought into play on the course with elevated tees and greens and provides great views of the surrounding countryside. The increased height of the course exposes it to wind in the area and play is generally influenced by a one or two-club breeze. Water features prominently on the course, coming into play on all but two of the holes.

The most popular hole on the course is the 370 m par four 10th. An elevated tee exposes a crescent-shaped fairway which doglegs almost ninety degrees to the right. Bunkers pit the left side of the fairway for the over-cautious; the right side of the fairway is bordered by water from tee to green. Big hitters will be tempted to carry the water and drive the green – with the wind from behind it is certainly achievable.
