Supertubos Surfing

Peniche, Portugal

Supertubos (Supertubes in English) is one of the best places to get barrelled in Europe. A beach break on steroids, Supertubos throws out a long, heavy barrel, over hard packed sand. As the crowd will attest, the giant tubes can cause some pain but are worth the risk.

Supertubos has a fast though not impossible left and a shorter tubing right. Close-outs are part of the deal. Supertubos is in all its glory with a northeast wind and a southerly groundswell. Some say it is best at 8-10ft, others say it is time to paddle in at this size. August to November is the optimum time of year to visit.

Supertubos is the main surf break in the seaside village of Peniche. The town is easily the best place to surf in Portugal and has breaks facing 3 distinctly different directions, so it offers plenty of hours in the water.

Supertubos and Peniche cannot be mentioned without acknowledging the fish factory and the rather foul smell the offshore winds carry out to the line-up. At least after a successful session at Supertubos the smell of dead fish will always be reminiscent of the best waves in Europe.
