Swiss Re Tower

London, England, United Kingdom

Set within the landscape of historic London, the Swiss Re Tower, with its striking resemblance to a rocket ship about to take off, provides a futuristic and whimsical counterbalance to the more staid British architecture of the City of London.

Its complex pine cone shape is fascinating to look up at when you are standing on the street below. The further you walk away from the tower, especially if you are at South Bank, the more you gain perspective for how truly unusual and radical the tower structure is. It is one of the most photographed buildings in the London.

What’s very cool about Swiss Re Tower is that it is London’s first environmentally aware skyscraper, designed to take advantage of natural light in order to reduce the need for energy consumption by up to 50 percent compared to other office buildings.

There is currently no public access to visit the interior. Although there is a dining room and bar on the very top floor, they are private. Some journalists have written articles about calling the restaurant and bar and being able to make a reservation and getting in, so it is definitely worth a try! This would be the only way you could visit the interior of the building. If you do get a reservation, be sure to bring a photo ID with you as you will be asked to provide one before entering the bar and restaurant.
