Hoi An

Tailoring in Hoi An

Hoi An, Vietnam

No visit to Hoi An would be complete without getting at least one item of clothing made. There are reputed to be around 500 tailors in Hoi An so choosing one is not easy, but I looked at the finished clothing on display and chose my tailor. I got several items made and they included 2 skirts, 1 pair of trousers, a warm coat and a shirt.

My experience varied; some items fitted and were well made, others not. When I washed the pair of trousers, they shrunk so much they were unwearable, but the coat and skirts were excellent. Although all the tailors I visited had a range of fabric from which to make garments, the selection is rather narrow. If, during your travels you see some you like, I recommend you buy it and get it made up when in Hoi An. There are fabric markets in Hanoi and places like Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City has an excellent selection. There’s also the Hoi An Cloth Market with helpful friendly vendors.
