Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute

Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Tandanya should be a must visit on every Adelaide tourist’s itinerary. It showcases a profound amount of local Aboriginal culture and art and it is conveniently located right in the centre of town. There is plenty to see and do at the centre, but one of my favourite things is the performance of traditional Aboriginal dances that is presented between Tuesday and Sunday at 12pm. Every Thursday at 11am there is also a free guided tour of the facility that introduces you to a vast amount of rich Aboriginal culture. As well as the permanent exhibits, there are always visiting or temporary exhibitions, which deal with some aspect of indigenous culture around Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. At the gallery and retail shop you can purchase your own piece of culture to take home with you. If you are looking to while away a couple of hours in the inner city, then Tandanya is a great choice. The gallery is free to enter, but there may be small charges for the cultural dance or didgeridoo presentations. The centre is open 7 days and it is located on the corner of Hutt and Grenfell Streets.
