Tasmania mountain biking

Tasmania Mountain Biking

Tasmania, Australia

Do you ride like the devil—a Tasmanian Devil? On your next trip to Australia, make sure you sample the mountain biking on this amazing island state.

Do you enjoy rocky terrain with creek crossings? How about a suspension bridge that is barely wide enough to hike your bike across? Pristine lakes? Myrtle forests? Lush, temperate rainforest? Or perhaps a disused tramway left behind from silver mining, years ago?

One possibility for the keen rider is to explore part or all of the course for Wildside MTB, “Australia’s Premier Stage Race on Tasmania’s West Coast”. Start amongst the peaks of the Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area and end up on the wild, untamed, western coast in the village of Strahan, riding tracks that challenge the pros themselves. At dusk, watch the Little Penguins on their nearby island or see if you can spot the endangered Orange-bellied Parrots or simply just enjoy the fine cuisine of a local restaurant.

For a more mellow holiday, hire mountain bikes (or a guide) in Launceston. Transport is available to several different high places, including Ben Lomond. You’ll be ‘turned loose’ to enjoy a marvellous descent along easy-to-ride, unimproved roads.

No previous mountain biking experience necessary. If you’re comfortable on a mountain bike, you are sure to enjoy this trip!
