The Bubble Surfing

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain

The Bubble is a right hand barrel on the north shore of Fuerteventura. It’s considered the best place to get deeply barrelled on Fuerte. The wave is actually an A-frame peak that breaks over a sharp rocky reef. The left is short and peeling, but the right is the real deal.

La Derecha (the right) is a deep, oh so hollow, tube with enough power to snap boards and men alike. Every wave is a chance to see the view from deep within the belly of the beast. It is also possible to take-off for the left then backdoor the peak and be nice and deep for a thundering tube ride.

The Bubble is at its hollowest on low tides and will get fatter, as the tide fills in, but still barrel. A northerly swell is needed and south winds are offshore. Fuerteventura is also a wind surfing mecca and for surfing winds are the key factor. Early risers are more likely to get the goods, wind free and crowd free. Crowds and dominant locals can also be a problem at The Bubble, midweek is a better bet for the travelling surfer.

The Canary Islands are like the Hawaii of Europe. There is warm weather year round and loads of quality surf breaks in a small stretch of coastline. The waves range from Hawaii-esque set ups like La Derecha to mellow ones like La Derecha de Alemanes, so named because of the multiple German surf schools there. The winter months (December to March) are better for surfing as the winds are lighter. A wetsuit is needed but out of the water the weather is summer like year round.
