Woodhall Spa, England, United Kingdom
The home of English golf, Woodhall features two championship courses – the Hotchkin Course and the Bracken Course. Hotchkin is the better known of the two, having hosted a number of national and international events and is often rated in the top 100 courses in the world. For anyone wanting to experience golf in splendid isolation, this is the place to be. Whereas many modern golf courses are often merely an excuse for a housing development, Woodhall Spa meanders along the natural terrain without any of the distractions of urban life. In fact you will travel through Nottingham Forest, home of the infamous Robin Hood and his Merry Men, on the way to the course. Make this your attitude while playing here – robbing the closely guarded birdies from the rich miserly course.
The bunkers on this course are to be avoided at all costs as they are penal; large pot bunkers litter the fairways and surround the greens and many a poor shot will be fed to the sand traps by fairways and surrounds which slope towards the bunkers. Hotchkin features only three short holes, but they are prime examples of the art of the par three hole. All require pinpoint accuracy as the pot bunkers lie in wait for any poor shots.
