San Francisco, California, United States of America
The Olympic Club is one of the most famed golf courses in the USA having hosted four US Open’s and is set to be the venue for the 2012 Open. It’s a remarkable achievement considering that the course has no water in play, despite being called the Lake course, and has but one fairway bunker in its layout. Don’t be lulled into thinking that the course is easy due to its lack of traditional hazards. The entire course is heavily treed, demanding accurate tee shots and the ability to shape your shots, and greens are both fast and tiered. The variety of hole lengths provide much of the appeal of the course; par threes range between 125 m to 204m, par fours from 263m to 418m and par 5’s between 477m and 557m. That keeps most of the clubs in your bag from getting any cobwebs. Even the short 260m par four 7th is not easy – a three tiered green awaits those strong enough to drive it. John Daly took six strokes to finish it after driving the green in the 1998 US Open. The 18th is the favourite of many players at the course offering a great view of the sloping fairways and the magnificent clubhouse, but with a viper of a green at the end of it. Make sure you have all your clubs with you.
