The Superbank Surfing

Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

The Superbank is not one surf spot, but four point breaks joined together by one long sandbank, a superbank. What started as a plan to dredge the nearby river mouth and replenish the sand on the beaches to the north ended up creating a surfers fantasy land, a tubular heaven, a surf spot where multiple 10 second barrels on the one wave, are a reality.

Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Kirra were once four adjacent point breaks each breaking into their own bay and all good waves in their own right. Kirra and Snapper Rocks were both world class points, while Rainbow and Greenmount were cherished longboard waves. Put them together though and The Superbank dwarfs them all.

The take-off at Snapper Rocks is hollow and critical with fierce competition for the inside. Down the line the barrels are plenty and drop-ins blatant. The wave mellows as it reaches the Greenmount section and only on the biggest swells joins into Kirra.

The Superbank turns the magic on with a southeast swell and wind. July through to August is when the best swells usually come, though it can break at any time of year. It breaks on all tides. The Superbank is in the heart of the Gold Coast with more than enough accommodation options and night time diversions to keep surfers happy.

The Superbank is located at Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
