Lofoten Island, Norway
Lofoten Island is known as the home of some quality cold water waves, with zero crowds and has the distinction of being the best known surf zone inside the Arctic Circle. When the surfing world finally caught on to the fact there were waves up there the limelight fell on Unstadt Point.
Unstadt Point is a left hand point break over a boulder strewn bottom. It is known to produce good clean waves up to 8ft. A southwest swell is best for Unstadt Point, with northeast winds and a rising tide. The break is consistent between August and November. Tubes and ice cream headaches are both to be expected and enjoyed.
Unstadt Bay has a beach break where the local surf school takes learners and a right that can be a long hollow ride. There is a small village there with lodging available. It is a good place to use as a base to explore the surrounding region as there are many other known and unknown surf breaks in the area. Unstadt village is also a good place to be initiated into the local home brewing tradition and friendly culture.
To surf Unstadt Point, and Lofoten Island, a 5mm wetsuit is the bare minimum, even in summer, and gloves, booties and hood are a darn good idea.
