Victoria Golf and Country Resort

Rajawella, Sri Lanka

Victoria Golf and Country Resort is laid out on a former coconut plantation in the scenic Kandyan mountain range, a 45 minute drive from the ancient city of Kandy. The Victoria course is routed through a hilly area with mountains in every direction, making it as fine a setting for a golf course as can be imagined. The front nine climbs into the hills to the summit of the fourth tee which provides a great view of the course and Victoria Dam, source of potable water and hydro-electricity for the region. The course has only 12 bunkers in total and they are not needed as the elevation and natural hazards provide sufficient difficulty. The 4th illustrates this well – at just 96 m and having no bunkers it sounds like an easy, short par three. But miss the green and you are likely to hit one of the many boulders protruding from the surrounds. Don’t expect to find your ball afterwards.

The back nine is an easier walk, beginning through the indigenous woodlands and moving into the coconut palms which frame the fairways and greens in tropical splendor.  The 14th flanks the water which also comes into play on the approach to the green on the 15th. A good drive will leave a mid iron into a sloping green – a good opportunity for a good score on an excellent hole.
