Water Puppets

Water Puppet Theatre

Hanoi, Vietnam

Although you can see the famous Vietnamese Water Puppets in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi is the traditional home. In Hanoi they’re centrally located at a theatre at the northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake. Puppeteers train for three years to learn how to manipulate the large, colourful, wooden puppets before they present to the public. Throughout the show the Puppeteers stand in water and the show is accompanied by a live band and singers.

Each “act” is a small scene or vignette. Before going into the theatre, you’re presented with a simple program in English which is helpful as it outlines each vignette or mini story. The show is a marvel and well worth the price of the inexpensive ticket. Tickets are in hot demand, especially during the high season, but I was able to buy tickets one day for the matinee performance the next. Sitting amongst the predominantly Vietnamese audience and “ooh” and “aah” with the children was fun and highly recommended.
