Waterloo

I had not done my research and didn’t realise Waterloo was so close to Brussels.   There is frost in the ground. It’s noon in early December . The thermometer on my fancy watch says it’s 34 degrees F. Trying to save money, we walked to the central train station from the hostel. It was a long way, but since I didn’t have my back pack, it wasn’t too bad. It was just very cold. We took the bus out to Waterloo. The museum had a movie that you had to pay to see, and you also had to pay to walk up to the top of the mound. We opted for the cheaper option, just the walk up the artificial mound with a lion statue at the top. As you climbed up, it got colder – the wind blew right through you. However, the views were incredible. There wasn’t much more to it than that. Then we wanted to walk to Hughmount. That’s where Napoleon pretty much lost the battle. It was a 20 min walk to there. And cold. But I believe neither of us would have walked there if we were alone. One of the local residents came around to make sure we weren’t doing anything else other than admiring the historical aspect of the place. It’s apparently private property now, although there isn’t a gate around it. So I took a few pictures, admired the setting and then walked back. I was ready to get out of the cold wind.

The 226 steps to the top of Lion Hill certainly get the blood pumping, but it’s worth it when you get close up to the lion; it’s a magnificent creature. It’s said to be made from cannon balls melted down after the battle of Waterloo and weights 28 tonnes. Amazing.
