Wild Coast Sun Country Club

Port Edward, South Africa

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, The Wild Coast layout is set against a dramatic Indian ocean backdrop making it beautiful, but a punishing experience for those who stray from the fairways. This course is part of a casino and entertainment beach resort on an unspoiled and wild coastline. Although not always windy, when the coastal winds do blow the course takes on the nature of a beast, making club and shot selection difficult. The course compensates for the wind to a degree with broad fairways and huge greens, but this in no way makes it an easy round of golf.

This scenic course is blessed with many natural changes in elevation and punishing rough. As is the case for most of the coastal courses in the country, a ball in the rough is unlikely to be found and even less likely to be playable. There are number of holes which could be singled out, but two characterize the nature of the course well. The par five 12th with a spectacular elevated tee plays down towards a cascading waterfall, followed by the par three 13th which requires you to play over the waterfall – a wide ravine separating the tee box from the green. It is a wonderful test of golf.
