Winged Foot Golf Club

New York City, New York, United States of America

Geoff Ogilvy won the US Masters here in 2006 with a score of 7 over par – that should tell you something about the level of play required for a passable round at this course. Fortunately amateurs are not subjected to the same tee box or pin placements as the pro’s so some pleasure and good scores can still be attained. The course gives a player a few clear clues of how to approach it with fairway bunkers on the best line for each hole. Your length and line needs to be good to leave you with an approach to the pear-shaped greens protected by deep bunkers.  This course exacts precise second shots – anything short of the greens will roll back to the fairway.

A.W. Tillinghast is responsible for more course designs in the rated top 100 courses than any other golf architect and he regarded the West courses 10th as the best short hole he had built. An elevated tee leaves little choice other than the line directly between the massive double bunkers, left and right of the green. Choose your club carefully – too long and you are faced with a fast downhill putt which will leave the putting surface with the smallest of errors on this quick surface.
