Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, in the south-eastern region of Brazil. It is the third-largest metropolitan area in the country, and is known locally as Beagá, which is the sound of its initials – BH – when pronounced in Portuguese. Belo Horizonte translates as Beautiful Horizon.

The city was the first planned city in Brazil and was founded in 1897, and now has a population of over 2.4 million, with around 5.4 million in the entire metropolitan area. The quality of life for its inhabitants is considered to be one of the best in the country.

Tourists will find a buzzing nightlife in Belo Horizonte, with a good array of bars, restaurants and night clubs, but there are also more cultural pursuits for the daytime, with its architecture – a mixture of contemporary and classical buildings – museums, and galleries.

Of Belo Horizonte’s cultural landmarks, many of them are situated in the Pampulha district, where the tourist can find the best examples of its contemporary architecture. In downtown Belo Horizonte, you can visit the neo-Gothic Boa Viagem Cathedral, the church of São José, and the Praça da Estação (Station Square), to name just a few places of interest.

As the city is built on several hills and surrounded by mountains, there are plenty of greens spaces to relax in, and the Parque das Mangabeiras, for example, has over 2 million square metres of greenery, and is located six kilometres south-east of the city centre in the hills of the Serra do Curral.
