Best Activities for Kids in Vancouver

Vancouver is a great travel destination no matter who your travel companions are. Vancouver happens to be a hotspot for families with small children as there is no end to activities that keep kids busy in this exhilarating town.

Perhaps one of the most exciting day trips for kids is a trip the Playland. Playland is a huge amusement park complete with a wooden roller coaster, arcade games, young children’s rides and more. During October, the park turns into “Fright Nights”, or a haunted park for Halloween. During a limited period in the summer, the fair at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is open, which has many vendors displaying their merchandise. The PNE also has daily entertainment and a petting zoo for the kids. The best part of the fair is the dog show.

The Telus World of Science (formerly Science World) has exhibits that enrich the mind while still being entertaining for young kids. Situated right near downtown Vancouver, Telus World of Science is a great place to take the kids and learn about how things work, whether it be the mind, the body or even electricity. There are daily shows and kid’s activities.

The Vancouver Aquarium is one of the best parts of Vancouver. It has an incredible display of playful seals, belugas, otters, amphibians and more. If you are lucky you will catch a dolphin show or a beluga feeding. The Aquarium is a great place to teach kids about respecting wildlife and see some unique animals.

Granville Island is a fun area that has many shops and exhibits. It is right on the water. The best part of Granville Island is not only the kids market, but the huge water park. Parents will love this park because it is free! The park is open from May to September.

Pick any one of Vancouver’s glorious beaches for a full day of fun in the sun and sand. Build a sandcastle, splash around in the salt water or just laze around in the sun. Jericho, English Bay, Spanish Banks and Kitsilano are all very popular beaches that offer large areas of sand and surf. Not all beaches have lifeguards on staff but all have food vendors and bathrooms. Parking can be scarce to be sure to leave early enough to get parking (Kitsilano beach parking can fill up by 12 noon during the summer).

As if the beaches in Vancouver weren’t enough,Kitsilano pool is heated and very popular in the summer. Its backdrop is the gorgeous Kits beach and pacific ocean. Kitsilano pool has lifeguards on staff. The pool is outdoors. If you are seeking something indoors to keep your little ones out of the sun there are plenty of indoor pools too – just check the Vancouver Parks Board website for a full listing.

Vancouver is a massive city with so much going on at all times of the year. While summer may be the best time to travel to Vancouver, you will still find plenty of activity to keep your kids and family entertained throughout the year in this exciting city full of adventure and intrigue.
