Campo Grande is Portuguese for ‘Big Field’ because it is surrounded by pastures and grasslands, and it is also known as the ‘Brown City’ due to the soil colour. Its population of around 800,000 consists of native Indians and many immigrants from places such as Paraguay, Bolivia, Germany, Italy and Japan, and this gives the city a diverse atmosphere. The majority of locals are employed in the tourist and service sectors.

The city centre is small enough to explore on foot, and there are plenty of cultural delights to enjoy, including museums, churches and parks. Shopping is a must, and although there are many shopping centres, it is the local crafts that are of particular interest for tourists.

The climate is tropical, warm and humid, with an annual average temperature around 23°C. The best time to visit is the summer as the temperature is pleasant with minimal rainfall.
