Glenorchy travel

When you get to Glenorchy, head over to the Information Centre before doing anything else. That way you can find out everything that is going on in this haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Glenorchy is just 45kms from Queenstown which is about an hours drive away.

The area itself is well known for its amazing bush settings so walking enthusiasts, photographers and general holiday makers find this visit to the high country is well worth it. The walking tracks alone can take you days to explore so it is fortunate that the Information centre doubles as the Glenorchy Hotel and the reception area for the Backpackers Retreat.

Please note that Glenorchy is a fond favourite for many annual visitors. In the busy season (traditionally between December and April) you must make sure that if you want accommodation in the Glenorchy area that you have booked, and if there are specific activities you want to enjoy, then it is advisable to book them at the same time.

Glenorchy is also the gateway to even more spectacular trips through to Routeburn and Greenstone/Caples as well as walking tracks around Mount Aspiring and through the Te-Waipounamu World Heritage Area. It is also a good spot to stay in if you are planning to explore the Fiordland National Parks.
