The name Guarulhos derives from the Tupi language, meaning “eaters, big-bellied people”, which is a reference to the original indigenous people of the area. The city is also host to the main São Paulo airport, Guarulhos International Airport, which is also known as Cumbica.

For many tourists, arriving at Guarulhos International Airport will be the only contact they have with this particular area, as it is not a tourist destination in itself. It is best known for the airport and the factories belonging to the many international companies that have settled there. Shoppers may enjoy a trip to Shopping International Guarulhos, a large shopping mall on the highway to São Paulo, but there is nothing out of the ordinary to be found that cannot be located at any other large mall.

The highest temperatures in Guarulhos are during February, and the coolest are in July. January sees the maximum rainfall.
