Kielder Water

Kielder Water, situated within the Northumberland National park, is the largest man-made lake in northern Europe. It is surrounded by coniferous forest and the Cheviot Hills, endowing the area with that true outdoors feel.

Because of its size the lake has large stretches of open water which providing room for sailing and powered craft as well as quiet backwaters for fishing and having picnics.

Facilities for canoeing, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and boats for hire can be pre-booked from the clubs offering them in advance of a visit. It is also possible to take your own boat or other equipment for use on the lake. Certain types of craft are not allowed on the lake. These include personal water craft or jet skis and inflatables less than 3 meters in length. Privately owned craft need to be registered with Kielder Water before use. All craft are subject to a 6 knot speed limit except for ski boats which are operating within the area designated for water skiing. It should be noted that no rescue boats operate on the lake.

For safety reasons swimming, bathing and paddling in Kielder Water is not allowed. For the fishing enthusiast Kielder Water offers many attractions. There are fishing boats available for hire and there is good fishing from the bank. The fish caught are mainly trout although there have been pike caught here. If you just want to try your hand at fishing it is possible to buy fishing starter packs from Northumbrian Water’s shops.

An interesting visit for the whole family, especially those who want a charge from water sports, is a visit to Kielder Water Birds of Prey Centre. Here it is possible to see pelicans, eagles and hawks in action. The centre also has deer and wallabies.

For those who would like a longer stay at Kielder Water there are four and five star log cabins for hire. The caravan site also has facilities for those who wish to bring their own caravans. There is a heated indoor swimming pool and sauna, a restaurant and a shop selling food and other holiday essentials.
