La Rambla

La Rambla

One of the most common things I’ve heard before going to Barcelona is the advice to be aware of pickpockets and do not participate in any of the games on La Rambla as a lot of them are just diversion tactics for pickpockets.

Walking La Rambla at night with my wallet tucked away inside a zipped up pocket which was covered with a hoodie wrapped around my waist, I was fairly confident I would be safe but decided to watch for anything of suspicion from other people wandering the busy street.

Watching the human statues and artists performing, its obvious there is a mass of confusion and no matter how safe your prevention tactics are, theres no foolproof way to protect yourself.

One man who had stopped at a newspaper vendor was struggling with his hand down the neck hole of his shirt and was struggling with something underneath his clothing. It turned out he was wearing one of the over the shoulder wallets you can wear under your clothing but was unable to get his money out.

The mans partner was getting more and more embarrassed the more the man struggled and he looked like doing himself an injury or running the risk of strangling himself as he turned and twisted his garments in an attempt to get his money.

More of a crowd had gathered around to watch this spectacle than the actual performers and when the man eventually surfaced with a note to pay for his goods, a cheer went up and the pair sheepishly walked away from the stall.

Safety is always the most important thing when it comes to storing money but this man had clearly taken it too far and hopefully he can laugh about the situation now!
