Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve covers an area of 448 acres in Nottinghamshire. It is designated as a National Nature Reserve because it is home to over 1000 ancient oak trees and has a unique mixture of woods and heathland. It is being considered as a Special Area of Conservation.

A popular attraction for visitors to Sherwood Forest is the Major Oak. This is a huge oak tree estimated to be around 800 years old. Local folklore has it that its hollow trunk was used as a hideout by Robin Hood and his men.

The Forest’s visitor centre has an exhibition devoted to the legend of Robin Hood. The exhibition was designed by Universal Pictures and depicts a mediaeval encampment in the forest. There is also an audio visual of how the new movie “Robin Hood” was made.

Along with this exhibition are woodland sets, figures and buildings which tell the story of Robin Hood and his life in Sherwood Forest. Although admission to the centre is free there is a charge for car parking.

The visitor centre also has a restaurant serving meals and light refreshments. Access to all parts of the centre is good for wheelchairs. There are push wheelchairs available on free loan and mobility scooters are available for a small charge.

The Robin Hood connection continues with a range of activities devoted to the legend. These range from drumming workshops to have a go archery. There are also displays of mediaeval crafts such as basket weaving and puppet shows for children. Please note that these events are not continuous and the centre should be contacted for details of what’s on at any particular time.

There are fun nature trails through the forest which are suitable for the whole family. In the forest there is a woodland grazing project using sheep from the Hebrides and English Longhorn cattle in an attempt to prevent the open areas of mediaeval heathland reverting to scrub.

Sherwood Country Park lies just north of Edwinstowe, two miles from Ollerton and 17 miles north of Nottingham on the A614 Nottingham-Doncaster road.
