Robson Street Vancouver

The Best Places to Shop in Vancouver

Vancouver is a bustling tourist city with plenty of shopping opportunities. Whether you are seeking high end couture, great bargains or locally made designers, you can find all of it in Vancouver.

In the downtown core of Vancouver, the most popular place to shop is easily Robson Street. The area is very accessible by sky train. Get off at Vancouver City Center and head left on Georgia Street and left on Thurlow Street. When you turn right on Robson Street you will find some of the best shopping in all of Vancouver lining the next several blocks. You can find everything from cosmetics to shoes to high end fashion.

If you prefer to explore a more traditional shopping mall, Pacific Centre is very near. You will find Pacific Centre across from the City Center sky train stop. This mall is huge. It has multi-level department stores and fashions for every budget.

Most of the stores downtown will be familiar to tourists and locals alike. You will find name brands that are recognizable worldwide. If you are looking for something a little bit different, head to west 4th avenue. The stores on west 4th are west of MacDonald Avenue. The shopping district is lined with unique and diverse shops that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. This area is known as Kitsilano and has many athletic stores, specialty food stores and gift shops.

If you are in search of something that you won’t find anywhere else, Commercial Drive is full of shops that feature local designers. The items found in these shops are often handmade and of the highest quality. This area of Vancouver caters to the “hippies” of the city, so you won’t find any massed produced garments that are made in sweatshops overseas.

One of the little known shopping secrets in Vancouver is Portobello West. This is a market that is held in the Creekside Community Recreation Centre from March to October every year. On weekends, the very best of local artisans and designers gather to display their handmade fashion, jewelry and art. The market has been open since 2006 and is not-for-profit. Buying from Portobello West supports the local economy of artists and ensures that you will be wearing fashion that you won’t see anywhere else!

No trip to Vancouver is complete without a visit to Granville Island. Situated south of the Granville Street Bridge and surrounded by False Creek, Granville Island Public Market features some of the freshest seafood and tempting cheeses, chocolates and candies in the city. Kids particularly love this area because there are plenty of great toy shops – including the famous Kids Only market (now just called the Kids Market, but locals know it as Kids Only). As the sun sets over Vancouver, this area comes alive with some of the best local talent. For a cheap date night, spend an evening at the Theatre Sports show.

If you visit Vancouver in hopes of finding some good shopping, you are in luck. Regardless of what you are looking for, there is something unique for everyone. The transit system in Vancouver makes all of the shopping easily accessible and the variety of shops offer endless options for whatever you fancy.
