Top destinations to make the most of this spring

When you need to escape from the same old, same old, holidays don’t have to only be for the summer. Plenty of places in Europe and further afield are ideally suited to an out-of-season trip, and can serve as a welcome break from the chilled monotony of the early months. Not only that, but many of these holiday choices will come at a bargain price if you can go in a week that avoids school holidays.

For early sun

Beat the SADS and get a dose of vitamin D with excellent value breaks. Within five hours flying time from UK airports you could be sunning yourself on a beach while your friends back home are still huddled around the fire. Top destinations for early sun include:

  • The Canary Islands
  • Egypt, particularly the Red Sea
  • The Gambia
  • Florida

Many of these destinations will be significantly cheaper early in the year than in the summer, and if you’re not a lover of scorching heat you can enjoy the best these locations have to offer at a more comfortable temperature than in the height of the summer season.

What could be better than setting down in a country where the sun always shines, relaxing on immaculate white sands and sipping cocktails while back home the rain carries on? Over on the Indian Ocean, the idyllic island of Mauritius is less crowded, less expensive and still just as beautiful during the winter months. The Maldives and Seychelles are equally stunning to behold, and offer a chance to experience real luxury at a competitive price when visited during the less popular early season.

Embrace the chill

For those who are seeking a real winter experience, the snowy landscapes around northern Europe and the mountains are the perfect place to wrap up warm and enjoy some stunning scenery. Head for Sweden or Lapland to enjoy some chilly fun and the chance to see the northern lights, or for a longer haul trip consider Canada, where you can enjoy everything from dog sledding in the Rockies to pampering at the Ice Hotel in Quebec.

Skiing destinations will not be as cheap or as uncrowded as the sunnier resorts, but offer some great family fun in some beautiful landscapes. The French Alps boasts many top winter sports destinations, all offering ski tuition and some great après ski fun.

Don’t forget, if you are planning some high adrenaline winter fun, to get good travel insurance in case of any accidents. Companies such as Columbus Direct are able to offer coverage for all types of situations at excellent value prices.

Have an adventure

Many tour operators offer excellent adventure holiday packages, perfect for a complete break from the norm. Safari in Kenya is just as good early in the year as it is during the summer holidays, and with prices at the lowest of the year you can afford a few added extras too.
