Top eco-resorts around the world

Top eco-resorts around the world

The world of eco-retreats has got a lot more confusing in recent years – especially with the phrase “eco-tourism” doing the rounds like a bottle of cheap vodka at a teenager’s birthday party. Saving the planet is now trendy – at last!

If you’re not the kind to eat off the land and fend for yourself under a shelter made from banana leaves, don’t panic – even though the word of the moment is green , it doesn’t mean that you have to get down and dirty yourself. We also know that you’d much rather hop on a plane than faff about with breakdown cover and ever-increasing petrol prices and luckily, saving the world one carbon emission at a time now comes hand-in-hand with luxury. Here are our picks of the top green retreats around the world.

Sjogetorp, Sweden

Sustainability is the word of the hour, but this quiet retreat takes it one step further again – self sustainability. Ok, so this is one for the more feral of you out there, but you never know, you might just enjoy foraging in the woods for that little something that will make your cup of tea extra sweet. Three hours southwest of Stockholm, you could find yourself in a tree house powered by the sun, eating crayfish from the lake round the corner.

Along a self proclaimed “eco-beach” in Western Oz, are a bunch of Eco-Villas and tents, offering the ultimate in beach-side green-luxury. There are elevated boardwalks made out of reclaimed wood which link each lodge to the beach and in-house monitors which tell visitors how much energy they are using. To add to the eco-friendly experience even more, sit on the beach right outside your front door to watch flat back turtles nest in the sand.

For blissful isolation, head to the Indian Ocean for Mozambique’s latest venture in eco-lodges. This little green gem can be found on what has been dubbed as “the Galapagos of Africa” – once there, you’ll be rewarded by a little boutique resort of just 15 thatched villas, all with private plunge pools, of course. Spend your time swimming with dolphins by day and listening to local story tellers on the beach by night. Perfection!

Whitepod, Switzerland

Whitepod is the ultimate in green-escapes – there are no roads leading to this luxury eco-haven in the Swiss mountains, so grab your skis or walking boots to get to your destination. The nine igloo-shaped pods which perch at a breath-taking 5,000 feet above sea level cater for up to 24 guests and are completely electricity free. The platforms on which these pods sit are moveable, which means only the smallest of footprints in the carbon sense – only with glu wein, roaring fires and panoramic alpine views.

9 Beaches, Bermuda

There’s no need to throw on a sarong over your bikini when heading to the transparent waters while staying at 9 Beaches – six of the 84 lodges sit over the water, so you can dip your feet in the sea whilst sipping on a mojito, in the privacy of your own space. These lodges also come with in-floor windows so you can see the aquatic wildlife underneath you, as well as free air-con; leave your window open and the sea breezes will soon cool you down.
