The Belgian City of Bruges

Top Tips for a Romantic Weekend in Bruges

The Belgian City of Bruges, fondly referred to as the Venice of the North, is one of the jewels of Europe. With its quaint cobbled streets, haunting Gothic architecture and more chocolate and beers on offer than you could possibly imagine, this city is undoubtedly one of the top locations for those looking for a romantic weekend away. Here’s our top tips for Bruges city breaks.

Bruges is unique, remaining almost the way it was 400 years ago. This is wholly down to the fact that the old town has never been touched by redevelopment (it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site). There are no gaudy high-rises or tacky neon advertising signs – this is a city to lose yourself in.

Bruges is far from being the dour city as portrayed in the film In Bruges. It is a maze of small streets, winding canals and creepy clock towers, charming cafes and restaurants.

Whether you want to visit the city by boat, bike or horse-drawn carriage, Bruges has it all. It really is the perfect place to go to escape the noisy, congested cities of the continent.

Being quite a small city, Bruges is an incredibly fun and effortless place to explore. It’s always advised that you start your adventures by visiting Markt Square, the picturesque central square.

Climb the Belfry Tower to be treated to some unique views of the city. Once you’ve taken in the sights, you can rest in one of many wonderful cafes and restaurants nearby. Whether you’re after some delicious Flemish cuisine or just some coffee and waffles, the Markt Square has it all.

The Burg is a particular place of interest for those who want to do a bit of shopping. There are many small market stalls, shops and galleries, selling local goods and wares for all tastes and budgets.

If you want to absorb more culture, visit the Groeninge museum, home to some of the finest works of the Belgian Masters.
Then you may as well throw away your map and get happily lost!
