Tropical Agricultural Garden in Lisbon

Tropical Agricultural Garden in Lisbon

Many visitors to Lisbon who wish to visit the Tropical Agricultural Garden are often confused by the fact it actually goes by three different names. Ask any local Lisbon person what the garden is called and you will be told it is the Jardim do Ultramar, the Jardim Agrícola Tropical or the Jardim Botânico Tropical. It is worth noting that almost every single guide book and tourist map names it the Jardim Agrícola Tropical (Tropical Agricultural Garden). However, if you are asking for directions, be prepared to hear it called any of these three.

The garden is quiet large, covering over seven acres, and can take quite some time to explore, especially in the hot summer months. It was originally opened in 1906 to house a selection of plants, flowers, trees and bushes which had been imported from Portuguese colonies such as Brazil, Mozambique and Angola, as well as other parts of North and South Africa.

Over the decades the collection of plants has been added to, and it now boasts more than 4,000 separate species within its grounds. Many of these species are rare and endangered, making the garden of significant scientific interest as a research aid.

Visitors to Lisbon will enjoy the garden whatever the time of the year, although the summer months are the best time to visit. However, this is a park with an agricultural theme, it is not landscaped parkland, it resembles a farm in more ways than it does a nature park. Anyone with an interest in agriculture or farming will find that the Tropical Agricultural Garden in Lisbon gives them a glimpse of agriculture in times past, and an insight into modern, cutting edge farming techniques at the same time.
