Universal Studios

Universal Studios

Universal Studios Hollywood is a working movie studio situated in Los Angeles, California and has been running ‘backlot tours’ since the earliest days of the studio.

The current, more extensive backlot tour which takes visitors around on a tram was introduced some years later, and in the 1980’s the studios were also developed into a theme park attraction with shows, rides and more. Universal Studios Hollywood now attracts in the region of 5 million visitors per year.

Following the rising success of the Hollywood studios and theme park, Universal Studios Florida was opened in Orlando in 1990 and featured many of the same attractions as the park in Hollywood, including a backlot tour, rides, shows and more though on a bigger scale than the original studios. Then in 1999, Universal Studios Florida was joined by a full-blown theme park, called Islands of Adventure, which has multiple thrill rides, roller coasters and more, all based on movie and TV themes. The two areas are connected by Universal CityWalk, an entertainment complex with cinemas, restaurants, shops and clubs, and all three were give the umbrella name of Universal Orlando Resort. Now Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure attract around 6 million visitors per year.

The Universal Studios theme park which attracts the biggest numbers though is Universal Studios Japan, with around 8.5 million visitors per year. Opened in 2001, the Japanese version again has generally the same themes and rides as the other two studios. Popular attractions across the three include Terminator 2 3D Battle Across Time, Shrek 4D, The Simpsons Ride, Back to the Future-The Ride (which is in Japan, but replaced by The Simpsons at the other two) and Jaws.

All theme parks also have entertainment and shows including characters wandering around the parks, plenty of places to eat and tons of shopping opportunities too!

Universal Studios Hollywood is located in Universal City, Los Angeles in California . The nearest airport is Bob Hope Airport in Burbank , though international visitors will land at Los Angeles International.
