Whitsunday Island

The largest island of the over seventy islands that make up the Whitsunday Island chain is Whitsunday Island. Even though it is the biggest of the islands, it is not an inhabited island, but is rugged and natural.

It is best known as the home of the famous Whitehaven Beach. This beach is a favorite spot of tourists to the islands, and even for tourists to Australia in general, but it is not built up for tourism. It is accessible only by boat, and has no amenities on the island itself.

One way to get to visit Whitehaven Beach is to take an excursion from Airlie Beach in a high speed, air-conditioned catamaran. Most such tours are scheduled to last several hours, and might take in another island, such as Hamilton Island, one of the most cosmopolitan areas in the chain of islands. The beach on Whitsunday Island is protected due to its status as a National and Marine Park. The beach consists of five pristine miles (or seven kilometers) of pure white silica sand. A variety of turtle species swim in the crystal clear turquoise waters at Whitehaven Beach. Rated as one of the ten best beaches in the world, White Haven Beach on Whitsunday Island is truly a paradise for nature lovers.
