The Juan de Nova Island off the coast of east Africa is a small piece of land that is used mainly for scientific research. As a result the island, which is named after a famous 15th century Spanish navigator and explorer, has the use of a small air strip, and there is no economic activity to speak of, as only a small military garrison and a group of meteorologists stay on the island. The tropical climate is pleasant, but at this point one would only visit the island as part of a research or scientific expedition.
