Zanzibar is a wonderful island filled with a remarkable, and remarkably old, culture, credited with being the originators of the Swahili language and possessing the only functioning ancient town on the east-coast of Africa, Stone Town.
The beaches on the island are white-sand gems, untouched, absolutely peaceful and everything that you could hope for in a dream Indian Ocean beach. Better yet, there are 25 of them.
The phenomenally clear waters surrounding the island are famous for diving and snorkelling, equipment and lessons can be purchased in many places across the island. If lucky, you may be able to swim with Whale Sharks which are occasionally spotted on diving trips.
Stone Town, the cultural hub of the island and the region, is somewhere that you can easily lose yourself in. Glorious villas and remarkable craftsmanship is on view in this UNESCO listed city and there are a limited number of accommodation options so if you are able to find a room here, take it- it is the best location on the island.
The rest of Zanzibar city has a wealth of accommodation on offer and most will be to a very good standard, but if you are seeking a real cultural experience you should focus on Stone Town or the remarkable beach front hotels and resorts which are perfect for that dream island adventure.
