Deception Island

One of the most accessible islands in Antarctica , Deception is actually the caldera of a volcano located undersea. It is famed as the only place on earth where you can sail into the mouth of an active volcano, and it is active. Many of the resources on the island were destroyed by two eruptions in 1967 and 1969 and there are now considerably fewer scientific research centres located here than previously. It is however still a fascinating place to visit due to the stark beauty and the incredible wildlife that is in the surrounding area such as humpback whales and penguins.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to stay on the island so visits can only be arranged on a day-to-day basis, generally as part of a cruise, but due to the inhospitable nature of the location this may be preferable. One of the most enjoyable things to do on the island is to swim in the waters which may seem a terrifyingly chilly prospect but due to the volcano underneath the temperature is surprisingly pleasant, as long as you don’t go too deep. Occasionally, the scientists are happy to act as a tour guide.
