French Southern and Antarctic Islands

The French Southern and Antarctic Islands can be found somewhere between Africa, Antarctica and Australia in the Southern Ocean. Iles Crozet and Iles Kerguelen are two near-polar archipelagos whose only inhabitants are researchers studying the indigenous wildlife, which includes thousands of penguins. Ile Amsterdam is a volcanic island, also deserted and the kind of place that would appeal to the most intrepid explorer. Adelie Land is a thin portion of the Antarctic continent which, along with the Southern Islands, belongs to France. If this rugged, remote land appeals to your adventurous spirit, the oceanographic ship, the Marion Dufesne, travels out there four times a year, setting sail from Reunion.
