The Heard and McDonald Islands are uninhabited, barren islands located to the far south west of Australia and far south from India. The active volcano and ice covered mountains make the islands an interesting place for scientists to study volcanic activity, and other than on an expedition, people are not able to simply visit the islands. Due to the fact that the islands are considered a nature reserve, permission to land from the Australian Antarctic Division will be necessary, and will only be given for scientific study conducted on the islands.
