Found not far from the popular party city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, Koh Russei is a tiny, untouched island that has long been popular with backpackers for its rustic vibe. Also know as Bamboo Island, this lush idyll is the perfect place to rest up from the mania but not far away on the mainland, as the cool blue waters wash over the beach immediately in front of your private bungalow. There is not a great deal to do on the island but that is what keeps visitors coming back. Most people spend their days lazing around on the beach, sipping a beer and reading a book but there are enjoyable waters to swim in and the virgin forest on the island is an interesting place to wander.
Many people come for a day trip but if you want a genuinely authentic Robinson Crusoe experience, stay in one of the few bungalows that line the beach. Many of them also offer BBQ at night under the stars and there aren’t many more romantic things to do than that. It should be noted that the island has limited electricity so it is best to bring a torch if you intend to stay over.
