Beijing
A tourist destination that now has millions of visitors, and hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, a trip to Beijing is now something everyone can do compared to 1972 when Richard Nixon made a surprise visit. Tiananmen Square sits at the heart of 5,000 square miles called Beijing.
You can immediately immerse yourself in the dynastic past of China by visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Ming Tombs, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace in Beijing.
You will want to take souvenir photos on the Great Wall and in Tiananmen Square. Take a rickshaw around the city or book one of the popular vintage sidecar tours.
Visitors can still sample the traditional Chinese attractions while also enjoying modern facilities. Some still refer to the city as Peking, and for authentic Beijing Duck it is the place to go to.
The Forbidden City is often on the top of the itinerary with its famous palaces, ancient displays of jade and ceramics and several museums. The National Centre for the Performing Arts is an amazing, futuristic building to visit.
