Havelock Island

Part of Ritchie’s Archipelago in the Andaman Islands, Havelock Island is named after the famous British General Henry Havelock, who was in charge of forces in the mutiny of 1857 and it is a wonderful place to kick back, grab a book and chill out for a few days.

The accommodation is relatively basic and those seeking a party may be best heading elsewhere as although the island is the most popular in the region, it rarely ever gets out of first gear. There are, however, plenty of other charms to be discovered on this rustic gem and there is wonderful snorkelling and diving to be had in the waters around the island. You can also study for one of the cheapest PADI certificates in the world here, making it a very popular choice so book in advance. It is also advised to be careful in the surrounding waters as there have been a few unfortunate incidents involving saltwater crocodiles in the region. If you are interested in wildlife, then a number of local guides can offer fantastic jungle treks which can include overnight camping if you are feeling brave enough but if you don’t want to go too far from the beach, there are a number of elephants which you can ride for a small fee.
