Meaning a ‘hundred thousand islands’, Lakshadweep is a stunning atoll located in the Arabian Sea. A haven for divers and people who enjoy remote island life, these beautiful islands are a glorious secret. You can only arrive here by plane or by commercial boat from Kochi on the mainland and it is essential to receive a special permit to visit the islands before arriving. These are easily arranged and can be issued by the government offices or from one of the resorts on the islands. Accommodation must be arranged in advance for any of the three resorts on the islands, all of which cater for international tourists and the standards are generally very high.
The three islands that can be visited by international tourists are Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat Island. Agatti is the gateway to the other islands due to it being the location of the airport and a disembarking point for boats whilst Bangaram is a stunning beach island and an absolute ‘must-do’ if you visit Lakshadweep. Kadmat Island is the home to scuba diving in the area due to the central shallow lagoon, which is perfect for beginners and experienced divers alike. The abundance of wildlife even when snorkelling is stunning and equipment can be rented from numerous places on the island.
