Bunaken

This tiny resort island in the Sulawesi area of Indonesia is world-renowned for its diving and snorkelling but if you are not so inclined towards water then don’t worry, it’s also a gorgeous place to lie on a beach to your heart’s content. Although considered expensive by Indonesian standards, the island is affordable if you have a decent budget and as most people tend to come here for the diving, you can often get a package deal offering you a good rate on room and equipment. The diving and snorkelling is generally viewed as suitable for those with some experience or at the very least strong swimmers as there are numerous cross currents which can easily make people drift away without noticing. If you are a beginner, there are some smaller sights available on request.

One of the few unfortunate elements of the island being resort only is the lack of independent bars and restaurants. It may be best to book a hotel in advance, taking into account the social areas that you like the look of and as there is not a great deal of entertainment on Bunaken, most people tend to congregate on the beach.
