One of the most glorious islands in Indonesia, Lombok is the lesser-known alternative to nearby Bali. Home to many magnificent beaches and jaw-dropping scenery, including a remarkable active volcano, get here before it becomes even more popular. As a haven to a great number of surf-travellers, the island is already a well established destination on the travel map, but there are a number of towns across the island where you can find bargain accommodation and a little bit of peace and quiet. Sekotong on the south-west coast of Lombok is fast becoming a favoured spot to relax and enjoy the sea air whilst Tanjung Aan, on the opposite corner of the island, is a strikingly beautiful bay that surely won’t stay this undeveloped for long.
Accommodation is available all across the island so you shouldn’t be struggling for a room anywhere you go. If you have an endless budget then Tanjung, close to Mataram, is a wonderful town with high-end, luxury resorts that can cater to your every whim. The Rinjani Volcano is the centrepiece of the island, and a remarkably beautiful one at that. There are a number of options for trekking to the summit but the best way is to take part in a three-day trek, often involving camping and a great deal of effort, but the view from the top is one to remember.
